George Bruce McPherson, Jr., son of the late George Bruce McPherson and Elizabeth Lindsay Jones McPherson, died November 29, 2016 at the age of 78. His love of life and caring and compassionate spirit will be greatly missed.

Born on January 28, 1938, Bruce was a proud, lifelong resident of Greenville. He attended Greenville County schools and the Sewanee Military Academy. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he also obtained his MBA.

Bruce enjoyed an over forty year career as a Securities Dealer. He began his career at Goodbody & Company in Charlotte, NC. Desiring to come back to Greenville, he took a position with the Edgar M. Norris Co., Inc. later BB & T Scott & Stringfellow, where he was Executive Vice President, Corporate Secretary and Board Member until his retirement. Bruce truly enjoyed his profession where he deeply cared for his colleagues and clients, whom he considered good friends. Highlights of his career involved serving as President & Chairman of the Securities Dealers of the Carolinas and his affiliation with the National Security Dealers Association. Upon retirement, he embarked on a second career managing the Walter S. Griffin Company, a family owned real estate firm. He took great joy going to the office every day and participating in the exciting aspects associated with the real estate business.

In addition to his professional career, Bruce was a servant leader in the community. He devoted his time and talents to First Presbyterian Church where he was deeply involved. He enjoyed his affiliation with the First Presbyterian Church Foundation and the YMCA of Greenville, SC Foundation, Inc. He was also a proud member of the SIBF (Society of International Business Fellows), the Poinsett Club, the Carolina Yacht Club, and the Cotillion Club.

In 1972, Bruce married the love of his life and best friend, Nelle Mills Griffin. Their love and devotion to each other was unparalleled. Their life together brought much joy and many happy travels. In their later years, Bruce and Nelle spent much time cruising on his boat affectionately known as the “Lil’ Nello” named after his beloved wife.

In addition to his loving wife, Bruce is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Schuyler Campbell of Charleston, SC, daughter Patricia McPherson Rudisill (Brian) and grandchildren Elizabeth Griffin Rudisill and Benjamin Daniel Rudisill of Charlotte, NC, brothers William Harrison McPherson (Mary Ellen) of McAllen, TX, and Thomas Ogburn McPherson (Gallatin, TN).

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to his loving caregivers Mary Smith and Hilda Sanders, as well as to Dr. Kathleen Oxner, Dr. Charles West, and Dr. James Jennings for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Foundation, 200 West Washington St., Greenville, SC, 29601 or the YMCA of Greenville, SC Foundation, Inc. at 723 Cleveland Street, Greenville, SC 29601.
