Anne Brown Crabtree died on May 16, 2017, at her home in The Woodlands at Furman in Greenville, SC. Born on May 17, 1926, in Raleigh, NC, she was the daughter of Roy Eugene Brown and Helen Andrews Brown. She is survived by her husband, Dr. John H. Crabtree, Jr., Professor Emeritus, Furman University. In August, they would have celebrated 69 years of marriage.

Anne was the mother of 4 children: John Henry, III (Cathy), Roy Eugene (Laura), Cynthia Anne Tisdale (Willis), and Ralph Newton (Lynne). She was the adored grandmother of Cassie Crabtree, Mary Rice, Will Tisdale, Maryanne Tisdale, and Arlyn, Julia, Rachel, Luke and Kate Crabtree. Three great grandchildren -Jacob and Henry Tisdale, and Charlie Rice - brought her much happiness.

Anne was educated in the public schools of Raleigh, NC. She attended Meredith College, and received her Bachelor of Arts with a major in music from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1946. She was a gifted pianist and organist. For many years, she and John sang in some of the fine choral groups in Greenville. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota and the Music Club of Greenville.

Anne loved music, dance, and the theatre. She was a great traveler. In mid-life, she lost her sight to retinitis pigmentosa. She still wanted to visit the great galleries, saying to John, “Tell me what you see”.

When the Herring Center for Continuing Education at Furman was dedicated in 2013, the large lecture room was named in honor of Anne and John Crabtree.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on May 25, 2017, at the Charles E. Daniel Chapel at Furman University. Following the service, the family will receive guests in the Garden Room. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, or to the charity of your choice.
